The 2008 Tour de France is coming to an end but on August 23 there will be a cycling event closer to home. This is not a race but a ride to fight and prevent a disease that affects 14.7 million Americans today - diabetes. It is an effort by the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness and fight one of the fastest growing epidemics today. For me, it involves a full day of cycling from Longmont to Estes Park, CO, for a good cause. According to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, more than 18 million Americans have diabetes; about 5 million don't know they have the disease. If the spread of diabetes continues at its present rate, the number of people affected in the United States will increase from about 14.7 million to 22 million in 2025. This same study reveals that 9 of 10 cases of type 2 diabetes can be avoided by taking several simple steps: keeping weight under control, exercising more, eating a healthy diet and not smoking. That is 90% of cases!!! These statistics are appalling, especially considering how much can be done to prevent it in the first place. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), following an appropriate exercise program safely can be key in preventing type 2 diabetes for Americans at high risk for the disease. Physical Therapy can be beneficial to improve strength and coordination, which can be affected by diabetic neuropathy. PT can also be helpful with the recommendation of appropriate footwear or assistive devices. If you or someone you know is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, consult us at Alliance Physical Therapy for an appropriate exercise and treatment plan to help reduce that risk.
