End of Summer Tips
Saturday, August 09 2008

With the end of summer vacation quickly approaching, the drive for making the most of the summer is at hand.  Many have last minute plans to get away and cram activities in before kids go back to school.  It is important to remember to take care of your back, so you can enjoy the rest of the summer.  It's never too late to work on your posture (don't slouch), lift with your legs (don't bend over the object -- bend your knees and keep your back straight -- and don't twist as you lift), sit with care (prolonged sitting in one position is a back hazard you might not suspect), stay physically fit (the better shape your body is in, the less susceptible you will be to injury).

Eating and drinking properly is equally important.  Smart choices are foods and drinks that are balanced.  Some examples are water/sports drinks, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fresh or dried fruit, low-fat energy bars, bagels, fig bars, Nutri-grain bars.  For those who are still playing softball, baseball and other competitive activities, research shows that replacing carbs is best done within 30 minutes after competition -- so a high-carb sports drink not only replenishes for the next day, but also replaces lost fluids and electrolytes.

Take a little time to relax, be thankful for what we have and enjoy the rest of your summer vacation!

Yours in health,

Karen
