Winter Exercise Rules
Saturday, January 31 2009

As the snow keeps falling and the mercury drops, many of us yield to the elements and give up our outdoor exercise routine.  But don't let the cold and snow scare you away.  You can safely enjoy that run or walk outside if you plan appropriately.  Compiled below is a list of winter rules to safely keep your outdoor routine warm during the cold season.

  • Breath Easy:  Contrary to popular belief, you cannot freeze your lungs by exercising in freezing temps.  Many people complain of a burning in their throat, caused by the dryness of the air not the cold itself.  One easy remedy to this problem is to wear a scarf or balaclava (ski mask) over the mouth to moisten the air as it is inhaled.
  • Dress Up:  Wear several thin layers of clothing that way you can shed them as you warm up.  Make sure your outer layer is a jacket that can be unzipped to vent if you get too warm.  Pick shoes that are supportive and have waterproof materials.  Avoid shoes that have mesh paneling.
  • Drink Up:  Dehydration can occur quickly because you don't see or feel how much you are sweating.
  • Take It Easy:  When winter weather gets really rough don't worry about your pace.  Take those days to fend off cabin fever and enjoy the fresh air.
  • Map It Out:  Scout out routes that you can depend on to be snow cleared, well lit, and traffic free.
