Blood Donation

Blood Donation

Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.  More than 44, 000 blood donations are needed every day. Cancer and sickle cell disease are just a few of the serious illnesses that require donations to survive.  A single car accident victim can require as much as 100 pints of blood!  Donating is super simple and only requires 4 easy steps.   Bring personal identification when you donate.  A driver’s license, work or school permit with a picture or passport will work.  A short medical history is taken.  A mini-physical consists of checking the donor's temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for the donor to give blood.  If you pass, it is time to donate your blood which typically takes 10-12 minutes.  For those who are scared…it really feels like a pinch.   Rest and refreshments are given after you donate and they tell you to drink lots of fluids and have a hearty meal. Typically it takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from checking in to resting. It really is that simple and one donation can help save 3 lives!  The Gage Edwards Memorial blood drive is set for Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Alliance Public Library from 11-5.  O negative blood is really needed, but no matter what your blood type, we would love to have you there!  Appointments are convenient for everybody, but walk-ins are welcome.  Call 762-8446 to schedule your appointment and help celebrate what would have been Gage’s 17 birthday.
