Happy New Year to all and here is hoping 2010 will be a great year!! It is time to reflect over the past year and take a look at what you would like to accomplish in the upcoming year. Maybe some of you have made your resolutions and more than likely they involve starting a new exercise program. In physical therapy, we set goals for our patients everyday that are individualized and specific to their unique needs. I urge you to do the same when planning your exercise goals by being as specific as possible. Instead of saying, "I need to lose weight" or "I need to go to the gym more" a more descriptive goal may state, "I will lose 1/2 pound a week by walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes every day." Breaking the program down into easy to handle steps will keep your expectations realistic and will hold you more accountable. Sharing your intentions and progress toward your goals with friends will also help you to stay focused. Writing your goals down also will help you to self correct if you stray and will help make your vision a reality. Remember to start slow and gradually build intensity and frequency. This will help to prevent injuries and prevent burnout. By planning ahead and pacing yourself, you can establish a healthy habit that will last longer than a few months! Speaking of exercise, stop in to see and try out our new AlterG treadmill and see what the buzz is about. We can help you in planning your exercise programs to help you to reach your goals whatever they may be. Alliance Physical Therapy wishes everyone a healthy and happy new year! Yours in health, Val |
