It is mid summer which means softball and baseball season is in midswing!! I am writing a series of articles discussing the benefits of postural restoration™ in the treatment of injuries and this week it is baseball and/or softball. In both sports, maximum power with throwing or batting is achieved if both hips are in a neutral position. Most people have slight variances which affect their ability to rotate their spines and shoulders most efficiently. If an athlete is unable to shift into both hips adequately, imbalances will develop which will most likely be popping or clicking in the hips, shoulders, or pain anywhere along the spine. Next time you watch a game, look at how much rotation is involved in throwing the ball starting in the legs, hips, spine, shoulder, and ending at the wrist. Next, think of the muscle imbalances occurring since this same movement is done repeatedly using the same muscles on one side of the body only!! Most often, these athletes will begin to show signs of excessive external rotation and a loss of internal rotation as compared to the other shoulder. Postural restoration™ corrects the position and aims to align the pelvis, spine, thorax, and shoulder girdle to treat or prevent instabilities, impingements, and rotator cuff injuries which may occur if left untreated. Let us be your first choice in treating all of your aches and pains from "playing ball" this summer. Your body will thank you for it. Stay tuned next week when I will be discussing how to stay injury free on the bike. Until then . . . Yours in health, Val
