Proud of UNMC Print
Saturday, January 10 2009

Quite a few years have passed since I graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.  Though I will never forget the special years spent at that institution, working toward a degree in Physical Therapy, I do sometimes forget what an awesome educational and research institution it was then and is still evolving into.  As I read through the recent issue of UNMC Discover (Fall 08), I was full of pride to not only be a graduate of UNMC, but to live in a state that supports and fosters the prominent position UNMC is taking in the world of medical research.  For instance, current research includes: a new coating for orthopedic implants that combines cubic zirconia (a man-made "diamond") with the lotus leaf to reduce the wear and tear of total hips and knees; how the treatment of apathy syndrome (an "I just don't care" attitude) may impact diabetes and Alzheimer's disease and how this syndrome may link those 2 diseases; and the development of Nanomedicine, an emerging medical science that lets small particles safely deliver drugs to very specific sites in the body, as a treatment for Parkinson's disease, hypertension and cancer.

I am proud that Alliance Physical Therapy continues an affiliation with UNMC as a clinical education site, and am delighted to have Haley Reeves as an intern in our clinic.  Haley will graduate in May with a Doctor's of Physical Therapy degree, and we are honored to be a part of her education.

Next week, you will ALL be back in school . . . PT101 winter break is about to come to an end.  Class dismissed!

Yours in health,

Karen
