The blessing that we have with the change of seasons in this area also brings along with it the potential curse for accidental injuries related to slick streets and sidewalks. In spite of our best efforts to take care when walking in winter weather conditions, at times we still end up catching ourselves or turning an ankle. If you have suffered from an ankle sprain resulting from the slick conditions, you can always go back to the traditional RICE protocol that we have frequently instructed you on in our previous articles. Just a review . . . that's Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Now if the sprained ankle is the only injury that you suffer throughout this winter season, you may count yourself fortunate. Other more drastic injuries such as wrist fractures, hip fractures or an injured back can also result from falls on the ice. Prevention helps by ensuring that your own sidewalks and driveway are clear of snow in your walkways. In spite of your best efforts, if you suffer from any injury related to weather conditions, consider physical therapy as a means to get you back on your feet. Yours in health, Karen
